What do you do on the 4th of July when your dad is a wildlife ecologist? You go out to gather cicadas! Dr. Karl Malcolm and his daughter Clara spent the day catching and cooking these loud little insects in New Mexico. Are they kid taste test approved? Read on to find out!
I recently told Clara about the edibility of the impressively loud cicadas now abundant in the pinion-juniper woodlands around our house in the Sandia Mountains. With the day off from work today she insisted we go on a hunt together to test / prove the point.
You don't need any kind of license to collect cicadas and there is no limit on the amount you can take home. We brought a few mason jars which were a perfect transport.
Celebrating America's birthday in style, outside with a curious and biophilic kid was the best way to spend it. The fat, candied bugs were the cherries on top. If you're grossed out I'll argue that they're basically dry group shrimp. Don't knock it 'til you try it!
